Sarah Binger Program Coordinator Hi everyone, Cede and Emma here! Today we met at the base house at our usual time, nine o'clock and then walked over to the pond. At the pond, we played leadership games and talked about what it means to be a leader. Right before we left for lunch at our home stays, we wrote about how we are leaders and what we can do to become leaders. We will share our stories with each other in a few days once we have built our stories. After lunch and spending time with our families, we rode rickshaws into Alibag city When we arrived, we played a market game. Each team was given 100 rupees and were suppose to go around buying things from shops that we have never seen before. The things we bought varied from food, things for worship, colored power, and drinks. After that, we went to Alibag beach and played cricket and did ANCHOR while watching the sunset. We were all very surprised when Krishna told us we were riding camels. To add to the whole day's excitement, it was also Roxane's 18th birthday!!! For Roxane's birthday, each home stay collected 18 things to give to her. She was also surprised with flowers, cake, balloons on the rickshaw, and candy. Overall it was a very great day for us and for Roxane's birthday. Lots of Love, Cede and Emma Cede's note: Hi mom and dad! I hope everything is good tell Ian and uncle Jay I say hi. Honey Bunches of Love. Emma's note: Hi family! Hope you're enjoying the weather! Miss you and will see you soon. XOXO Hey everyone, Jamie and Mimi here. Today, we started the day early by meeting at the base house at 6:00 a.m. for a sunrise hike up a nearby mountain. On top of the mountain, we reflected, ate snacks, took pictures, and laughed. Once we descended from the mountain, we had time to eat breakfast and relax with our home stay families. After eating and playing games, we met back at the base house at 10:00 a.m. We watched a documentary about powerful leaders on the Peace Boat made by our very own Carlos, one of our in country mentors. Later, we agreed to meet at the cricket grounds at 4:30, and went our separate ways to spend a few hours with our home stay families. At our home stays we both played with neighborhood kids and organized our things. Playing cricket for the second day was much easier as we knew most of the rules and the basics of the game, but it was still difficult to pitch and swing. It was also very sunny today. By the way, we were both teams captains. My (Mimi's) team won! BUT my (Jamie's) team was more lit. For the second time around, after playing, we practiced our routines for our dance performance on Tuesday. We ended the day with ANCHORS and two truths and a lie. We ate dinner, and now we are currently writing this post.
Much love, Jamie and Mimi Jamie's Note: Hey Mom, Dad, Gigi, and Israelito! My birthday is in 10 DAYS! Anyways, love you say hi to everyone, and DON'T eat my chocolates. Mimi's Note: hi fam, say happy bday to z on Wednesday and enjoy the rest of your time without me :)) Hey everyone! It's Faye and Jadyn reporting on our second day in Chinchoti. Now that it is our second day here, everyone has adapted really well and are having a great time. Our day began after breakfast with a learning session/activity in the main house where we explored a little more about our identities. After some cookies and juice, we went on a beautiful tour of Chinchoti. With our cameras on hand, we made our way to Dhudale Davi(milk goddess) Lake. We fed the fish with dough and saw cows, bulls, and much more. After a long walk we returned to our homestays and ate lunch with our families. In Faye's homestay, Lincoln girls were taught more Marathi, played the drums, and made friendship bracelets. As for Jadyn's homestay, we were so tired from our walk, that we had some chai and cookies and took a long nap with the girls at our homestay. At 4:30 everyone met and went over to the cricket pitch for game. The girls on Krishna's team came home with the victory, but all in all our cricket skills grew tremendously. Then we danced on the rooftop of the dance school, to a energetic song(linked below). Tired and sweaty, we ended the night with ANCHOR (share appreciations, news, concerns, hopes, obscurities, and a reading), and watched the stars in silence, similar to a silent meeting. In our homestays we had dinner and washed up for bed. Hello parents and other fans! This is Maia and Roxane writing from our base house in Chinchotti. After a day of carrying very heavy backpacks we are very tired but happy to have arrived at our homestays. To get here we had to take a boat, a bus, and a rickshaw, (the latter two going over some pretty rough dirt roads), so being on stable land is a relief. During the boat ride we sat on the deck and enjoyed watching people feeding seagulls. We later learned that feeding seagulls people food is not a good thing and can result in premature death for them. We also got a free concert courtesy of Fifth Harmony cover band members Jamie, Emma, and Faye, (Mimi swayed along). India, (the individual), is also turning out to be quite the photographer! After the boat and super packed bus ride we rode in rickshaws to Chinchotti where we were greeted with water, hand washing, and lunch. After the delicious meal we were sent off to meet our homestay families. Maia, Lauren and Faye’s homestay family includes a mom, dad, brother, sister, and grandma. In the beginning they tried to talk to the girl In Marathi but were happy to find that she speaks English pretty well. They played Uno together and danced to the girl’s favorite songs. Roxane, Megan, and Mimi’s homestay family has occupied their time with teaching them a new card game and played Uno with them as well! They were also greeted by a very large amount of smiley neighbor children and tried (unsuccessfully) to teach them the game Slide. After hanging out with the families and doing activities provided by the World Leadership School we started our training in traditional Indian dance which so far has proven to be very difficult. After enjoying another big meal we now look forward to sleeping.
Hi everyone, this is Sammi and Lauren on the rooftop of The Garden Hotel on day 3! Today was a day filled with connections, and the widening of our comfort zones. We visited the largest sum in India, Dharavi. Took three different modes of transportation, and spent time with the students of the Reality Gives community center. One of our favorite parts of the day was having a dance party with the students before the girls gave us Henna. It was amazing to see the similarities between the girls in the slum and ourselves, such as loving selfies, Instagram, and Gangam Style. We experienced the organized chaos of Mumbai from our taxi ride, and felt like part of the daily system as we bought our train tickets, making us feel more like part of the community of Mumbai and less like tourists. We ended our day with a delicious meal on the rooftop on the hotel where we could see the skyline of Mumbai. We are excited to see what awaits us in Chinchotti tomorrow. – Sammi and Lauren
Hi, Megan and Meredith here, coming at ya live from the rooftop of the Garden hotel. Today was a long day but we powered through despite being jet lagged. We started our day with a nice breakfast and went back to the room to rest. Our room (Megan, Meredith, Lauren) took a nice walk with Fabris to the Gateway to India, which was a beautiful sight and we were able to see the Arabian Sea which was filled with many boats. After that the whole group took a bus to a reservoir alleged to have healing powers. Next we visited Gandhi's house/museum which included his bed, his library, and the story of his life. We went to eat lunch and the group was really able to bond. After lunch we went to Shiva's temple and were welcomed to participate in the ritual. The final stop on our tour was to see a cow sanctuary and we got to feed them hay as well. We ended the night with dinner and had a group reflection meeting. The resonating sound of cars communicating and the voices of a new language being spoken as well as the smells of street food and exhaust overwhelm us. Tomorrow we are going to Dharavi which should give us new perspectives and our leaders for the day will be Sammi and Lauren!! We're so glad you can follow us on this journey.
The blizzard could not stop us. Despite our Tuesday flight being canceled, we managed to leave on Monday night. Arriving in Dubai at 8pm and not arriving to Mumbai until 2am, we are now all a well-traveled group. We are getting some sleep to avoid jet lag, but will be ready to explore this amazing city tomorrow.
13 NEW Lincoln students and 2 advisors (Anita Thompson and Barret Fabris) will depart for India on March 14. The students have been participating in the India Program since Winter Break. The program has consisted of extensive readings, writing, and engagement with Lincoln community members. Upon arrival in Mumbai we will explore this bustling metropolis, applying the discussions we have had on politics, religion, gender, poverty, bias, and exchange amongst others. After our time in Mumbai we will then be traveling north by Ferry to the town of Chinchoti. We are excited to share this experience with all of you! See you soon, |
